Mahatma Gandhi University

The Mahatma Gandhi University with B+ accreditation of National Assessment and Accreditation Council was established on 2nd October 1983, as the fifth University in the southernmost State of Kerala, India. The University has a sprawling main Campus in Athirampuzha, a hamlet 13 Kms. off Kottayam town. Apart from this, the University has 8 Satellite Campuses.

The University enrolls 1,50,000 students on an average every year to its 250 Courses in graduate, postgraduate and M.Phil/Ph.D. programs through 21 University Departments, 26 Engineering Colleges, 1 Law College, 4 Medical Colleges, 21 Nursing Colleges, 8 Nursing Institutes under School of Medical Education, 3 Centres of School of Technology & Applied Sciences, 5 Pharmacy Colleges, 7 Dental Colleges, 3 Ayurveda Colleges, 2 Homoeo Colleges, 1 Music and Fine Arts College, 128 affiliated Arts and Science Colleges, 43 Education Training Colleges, and 12 University Colleges of Teacher Education. Mahatma Gandhi University has made its presence outside its territorial jurisdiction through the 75 off-campus centers – 63 centers within Kerala, 4 outside Kerala, and 8 abroad.

The Mahatma Gandhi University boldly took a lead to initiate the Self-financing Stream in the University system in 1993, the University has now 25 Self Financing Institutions under its orbit, offering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Nursing, and Paramedical Courses. As per the directives of the UGC, the University has introduced Choice Based Credit Semester System and Grading in its UG programs during the academic year 2009-10. Mahatma Gandhi University has 10 Inter disciplinary Schools of teaching and research and 11 Schools of higher learning in Applied Science and Professional Studies, with academic autonomy.

The courses in the Departments are conducted in the credit and semester system. The Schools have tied-up with UGC, FIST, DRS, DST, ISRO, COSIST, CSIR, DAAD, STEC, ICMR, BARC, MOEF, ICCSR, ICHR, and IED and taken up more than 70 Research Projects. The online theses of MGU have turned out to be one of the top-visited web resources. At present, Mahatma Gandhi University offers research facilities and guidance in over 40 disciplines through its own Departments as well as 202 approved research Centers.

The University has a web-enabled Central Library and 21 Departmental Libraries, 4 Study Centers. Besides the Main Enquiry, PRO and RTI sections in the University campus, 7 Regional Information Centers shoulder the responsibility to reach the academia, student community, and the general public.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University

The Indira Gandhi National Open University known as IGNOU is a national university with its headquarters in New Delhi, India. IGNOU, established in 1985, the largest university in the world with 3,500,000 students. The University has efficient and effective networking of 48 Regional Centers, 6 Sub-regional centers, and over 1030 study centers all over India. IGNOU’s method of instruction differs from that of other conventional universities.

The University has adopted a multimedia approach to the instruction and follows a two-tier system of evaluation. Its aim is to impart education by means of distance and open education. IGNOU hosts the Secretariats of the SAARC Consortium on Open and Distance Learning (SACODiL) and the Global Mega Universities Network (GMUNET) initially supported by UNESCO. In 1999, IGNOU launched the first virtual campus in India, beginning with the delivery of Computer and Information Sciences courses via the Internet. IGNOU makes use the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) extensively for imparting education.

In addition to self-instructional printed materials, the university utilizes Audio/Video program tapes, teleconferencing, Gyan Vani (FM Radio), Gyan Darshan (educational TV Channels), computer networks for imparting instructions. With the launch of “One-Stop Education Portal SAKSHAT’ in October 2006, IGNOU developed a plan to use this platform. IGNOU has a large number of programs, ranging from purely academic to technical, professional, and vocational at various levels leading to the award of Competency Certificates, Diplomas and Bachelors’s, Masters’s, and doctoral’ degrees to successful candidates. Many of these programs are modular in nature.

IGNOU has an international character and offers its programs in other countries, which include United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sultanate of Oman, Bahrain, Doha, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Maldives Nepal, Kenya, Fiji, Caribbean Islands, Samoa, Malaysia, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore, and Ghana, among others. The University also offers its Distance Education Programmes in collaboration with UNESCO and International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa, Liberia, Madagascar, Ghana, whereas, education program in Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Seychelles, Jamaica, Malawi and Belize are being offered through an agreement signed with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL).
