The Indira Gandhi National Open University

The Indira Gandhi National Open University known as IGNOU is a national university with its headquarters in New Delhi, India. IGNOU, established in 1985, the largest university in the world with 3,500,000 students. The University has efficient and effective networking of 48 Regional Centers, 6 Sub-regional centers, and over 1030 study centers all over India. IGNOU’s method of instruction differs from that of other conventional universities.

The University has adopted a multimedia approach to the instruction and follows a two-tier system of evaluation. Its aim is to impart education by means of distance and open education. IGNOU hosts the Secretariats of the SAARC Consortium on Open and Distance Learning (SACODiL) and the Global Mega Universities Network (GMUNET), initially supported by UNESCO.

In 1999, IGNOU launched the first virtual campus in India, beginning with the delivery of Computer and Information Sciences courses via the Internet. IGNOU makes use the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) extensively for imparting education. In addition to self-instructional printed materials, the university utilizes Audio/Video program tapes, teleconferencing, Gyan Vani (FM Radio), Gyan Darshan (educational TV Channels), computer networks for imparting instructions.

With the launch of “One-Stop Education Portal SAKSHAT’ in October 2006, IGNOU developed plan to use this platform. IGNOU has a large number of programs, ranging from purely academic to technical, professional, and vocational at various levels leading to the award of Competency Certificates, Diplomas and Bachelors’s, Masters’s, and doctoral’ degrees to successful candidates.

Many of these programmes are modular in nature. IGNOU has an international character and offers its programs in other countries, which include United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sultanate of Oman, Bahrain, Doha, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Maldives Nepal, Kenya, Fiji, Caribbean Islands, Samoa, Malaysia, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore, and Ghana, among others. The University also offers its Distance Education Programmes in collaboration with UNESCO and International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa, Liberia, Madagascar, Ghana, whereas, education programme in Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Seychelles, Jamaica, Malawi and Belize are being offered through an agreement signed with Commonwealth of Learning (COL).

Holy Cross College of Management and Technology got approval as an IGNOU Study Centre on July 8, 2011, with Centre Code 1462 D and offers PGDPM, CHR, CTE. Mr. Robin Jacob Kuruvilla is the Co-ordinator of IGNOU. 

Post-Graduate Diploma in Plantation Management (PGDPM)

The plantation sector has great significance due to its high employment potential and provides opportunities for income generation to a large section of the society especially to women. In addition, the plantation industry offers a lot of potential for earning foreign exchange through the export of produce from plantations. The PG Diploma programme in Plantation management seeks to develop competent human resource for the plantation industry.

It provides exposure to various management practices that are relevant to the professional management of the sector. And also offer technical know-how required for effectively managing major plantations such as tea, coffee, rubber, spices etc. The minimum duration of the course is 1 year and the maximum is 4 years.

Certificate in Human Rights (CHR)

This program is meant to sensitize the learner about Human Rights issues and develop a basic understanding of Human Rights and their enforcement, to create awareness about human rights including the emerging issues and debates, promotion of understanding of tolerance, gender equality, and harmonious coexistence among social, national, ethnic, religious and linguistic groups. The minimum duration of the course is 6 months and the maximum is 2 years. It needs eligibility of 10+2 or its equivalent or BPP from IGNOU.

Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTE)

The programme will enhance the teachers understanding of learners, the learning process, the nature and structure of language, and the teaching of it in terms of new and more effective methodologies of classroom management, material selection and evaluation. This program also helps the teacher to gain insights about the language learner, not only as a cognitive entity but as a social being, functioning in a multilingual environment.

It enhances one’s proficiency in English, not only in terms of the structure of English (sounds, words, grammar) but also at the level of discourse. The minimum duration of the course is 6 months and the maximum is 2 years. Graduates of three (3) years of BELED Or 2 years PTT, ETT, or 10+2 with two years of teaching experience are considered eligible for this course.
